In many cases a very effective solution to preserve an object is to create a custom housing, such as a the cloth covered clamshell boxes used here.

Conservation Treatment – Stationery Binding
This ledger exhibited common damage for many 19th century ledgers – stationary bindings. Degraded and worn leather, broken text block sewing, detached cover. The treatment included resewing sections, repairing/reinforcing sewing supports, building a new paper “spring” for the spine, and integrating toned leather and Japanese paper to repair the cover.
